But Daniel made up his mind that he would not defile himself with the king’s choice food or with the wine which he drank; so he sought permission from the commander of the officials that he might not defile himself. (Daniel 1:8).
Around 600 BC, Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, besieged Jerusalem. When Israelite King Jehoiakim surrendered, Nebuchadnezzar ordered his official to bring back to Babylon some of the nobles of Israel. Among these were Daniel, and his three friends who would eventually be thrown into a fiery furnace rather than worship the Golden Image put up by Nebuchadnezzar.
Nebuchadnezzar set up his own health plan. He wanted Daniel and the other Israelite nobles to eat only the king’s choice food. We’re not sure what this food was but it was probably unclean. It violated God’s dietary laws for the Jews.
Daniel refused to disobey God. He wisely tried to find a way to be obedient to his captor while still obeying God. God blessed him and the commander of the officials listened to Daniel’s plan. We all know the rest of the story. At the end of the specified time, Daniel was presented to Nebuchadnezzar. Daniel was obviously so healthy and strong and wise that the king appointed him for special service.
Daniel was able to follow his conscience and still be a good “citizen”. I believe that God enabled him to do this because Daniel was faithful. He knew what it might cost him, but he obeyed God.
Nebuchadnezzar could get away with making a law and expecting everyone to obey it; he was an unelected, all-powerful king.
President Obama on the other hand is an elected “servant of the people”. He has no right to make laws without the consent of the governed. In the United States of America we have laws. We have a Constitution and no one, not even the president gets to disobey it.
In 1983 an ordinance was passed that is still in effect that says that taxpayer money cannot pay for abortions except in the cases of rape, incest or to save the life of the mother.
Recently, self-employed individuals have been forced to participate in the president’s supposedly affordable health insurance plan. Not many people realize it, but this health plan will pay for other people’s abortions. The citizens have no choice. They will be fined if they don’t participate in this tax disguised as a health plan. Levies against people will be attached to their tax returns and the IRS will go after them if they don’t pay up.
Daniel had very few choices. If he wanted to be faithful to God, he could only pray. He prayed and left the rest to God.
But Christians in the United States have choices. We can urge our congressmen to insist that the president obey the Constitution that he swore he would uphold when he was inaugurated. Failing obeying the law, Obama should be impeached.
For the last few years, Christian leaders have been warning us what would happen if Obama’s plan was not stopped. In spite of his poor record as president he was reelected. This was his signal that he could act like a king and do whatever he wanted to. When the people would not stand up for their Fourth Amendment rights, he went after their First Amendment rights. (Remember the 4th Amendment? You know that right not to be forced into unreasonable searches? What about being stripped searched at airports is not unreasonable? Why are Americans quietly enduring this humiliation?)
If the warnings that we were about to lose our First Amendment rights had been heeded we would not be in a place where we have to pay this ungodly tax or be in contempt of the law. My brothers and sisters in Christ, many people tried to warn you. Over a year ago I tried to encourage everyone to get together and fight our common enemy – an out-of-control government. (See post “Let Us Fight Together”, 7-24-12).
We’ve had time to stop this wicked, unconstitutional, socialistic “health care” tax. It will take more than just the few companies and church groups who are fighting to win this battle. The vast majority of Americans need to rise up and say, “We won’t do it. You, the government, are out of bounds. You are wrong. We are right. This ‘health care’ tax is not about health. It is about control. It is about King Obama playing god over everyone’s lives.”
Many things in the supposed health care plan are in direct violation of God’s law. Should Christians be comfortable with the news that Obama’s health care law could finance as much as 10 percent of all abortions nationwide each year? A Charlotte Lozier Institute study found that the total number of taxpayer-funded abortions could range from 71,000 to 111,500. Why are Christians not waking up? Must they be thrown into the lion’s den before they finally realize that they are paying to kill babies and cannot disobey God? My Christian friends, we do not have to wait that long. There is still time to act before “king” Obama declares anyone who won’t go along with his rules to be a criminal.
Two thousand, six hundred years ago a young man realized that that is just what was happening when his king tried to enforce his set of health rules on his servants.
How did Daniel respond? When Daniel was in captivity, did he remember the Scriptures? I believe that Daniel knew his Scriptures. He probably found great comfort in the Psalms.
I wonder if he prayed:
Rise up, O Judge of the earth, render recompense to the proud. How long shall the wicked, O Lord, how long shall the wicked exult? They pour forth words, they speak arrogantly; all who do wickedness vaunt themselves. They crush Your people, O Lord, and afflict Your heritage. They slay the widow and the stranger and murder the orphans. They have said, “The Lord does not see, nor does the God of Jacob pay heed.”
Pay heed, you senseless among the people; and when will you understand, stupid ones? He who planted the ear, does He not hear? He who formed the eye, does He not see? (Psalm 94:2-9).
This prayer is certainly applicable to us. Our leader is arrogant and he is responsible for killing orphans (unborn babies). He doesn’t seem to think God is watching. We must pray that God will change our president. We must pray that our elected officials will hold Obama accountable for breaking the law.
Daniel also knew his history. I’m sure that the similarities to Joseph’s story (Genesis 37ff) were not lost on him. Joseph, too, obeyed and trusted God while under the authority of a heathen ruler. God directly intervened to help both Joseph and Daniel.
Let us learn from history. Let us be like Daniel. Let us pray, but let us stand firm against all ungodliness.
Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. (I Corinthians 16:13)
