You have heard that it was said, “You shall not commit adultery”, but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in this heart (Matthew 5:27,28).

In this final week of “women’s month” I feel the need to say something that is on my heart. It is all too easy for us to rail at the men for their concupiscence. Yes, we expect men to keep control of themselves and not harm women. But what part might women be playing in the loose moral attitudes of our day? I believe that we women have an obligation to dress modestly.

I make my appeal for modest dress for three reasons.

First, the Lord Jesus Christ made strong, serious statements about lust. He told men that just even thinking about women in a lustful way was the same as adultery, a crime that was punishable by death in those days. A popular saying today is, “Just because I am on a diet doesn’t mean I can’t look at the menu.” Sorry, but men don’t get to look at the menu. Jesus didn’t stare at the menu. And women, we need to stop presenting a “menu” that is going to get men in trouble.

The corollary to what Jesus said is, “And every woman that entices a man by the way she is dressed is guilty of adultery also.” So, if you go out of the house with a revealing blouse on and five guys commit mental adultery with you, you have committed adultery five times that day.

Think about it. Adultery is not an act that is done alone. It is a sin between two people. You are the other half of that sin if you do not dress modestly.

Secondly, I believe that the extreme feminists of our day use the way they dress to make a statement. I’m talking about non-Christians who wouldn’t care what Jesus had to say about anything. It is a subtle form of power for some women to dress in an alluring way and then tell men “hands off.” She can control the guy’s eyes and his mind and feel the pleasure of his attention. Never a thought is given to the fact that he may be married and now he is committing adultery, betraying his wife. That doesn’t matter to the woman who wants to be in control.

It used to be true that if a man violated a woman and it came out that she was dressed like a streetwalker, the judge at the trial would have some sympathy for the man. Now, of course, men should not harm women no matter how they are dressed. There is such a thing as running the other way! (“Resist the devil and he will flee from you” (James 4:7)).

But we have swung the pendulum completely to the opposite extreme where men are always guilty and women have no guilt whatsoever. That is how a godless society acts; not a Christian society. “You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God?” (James 4:4a). Ladies, don’t follow the world’s pattern in how you dress if it is not modest. You will actually be playing into the hands of those who want to control you. Think for yourself. Don’t play by their rules; or you make yourself “an enemy of God” (James 4:4b).

Well, some say, there have been times in history when showing your “décolletage” was the style. It’s ok if everybody dresses like that. First of all, not everybody dressed like that; it was only the style among the decadent rich. Secondly, even if “everyone else is doing it”, that will not be a good enough excuse when you must face God with your behavior. No matter what your situation is, as a woman you are called to model femininity in your modest dress, respect for others, and gentle spirit. We are called to think about others and that includes those weak men out there. Yes, they are to have self-control, but why would you deliberately put temptation in front of them? Would Jesus be happy with your selfish behavior?

Why does anyone think she has the “right” to dress however she wants? Much of the push for this comes from the pro-abortion group. After all, they are all about “controlling their own bodies”. This includes what they wear on those bodies. For some of these women it is about sexual license with no consequences. For others, the open blouses are the symbol of women’s freedom.

You need only look at what happened during the French Revolution and in Hitler’s Germany to see this. At their biggest celebrations women went topless. The French paraded around their new goddess on the shoulders of a rebellious group. They went to a cathedral and proceeded to desecrate that holy place with a huge orgy.

In more recent times, in Germany there exists today some video footage of one of the Nazi parades featuring topless women riding around on the floats. How did these women get talked into this godless behavior? They believed that this was an ultimate expression of their freedom. But what does God say about it? Is it freedom, or is it license?

Thirdly, ladies we have every reason to dress modestly, if for nothing else to show the world that we are different. Do you desire to be a good witness for Christ? Show it in how you dress. If you dress modestly, your demeanor will follow. People will respect you. People do not respect hypocrites.

We often debate about the difference between preaching the Gospel and “lifestyle” evangelism. Both are important. You will get a chance to tell about Jesus and you will have more credibility if you are dressed modestly.

How do we know what is modest? I tell my daughters to imagine Jesus in the room. Would He blush at what you are wearing right now?

The problem is everywhere even in our churches. Please read a pamphlet entitled “Modesty Matters”, put out by Family Research Council. It is to our shame that Jesus would be embarrassed in some of our churches. We must get back to remembering that men and women are made in the image of God. We must respect that. Men should not do anything to harm a woman – an image-bearer of God. Likewise, women should remember that men – also image-bearers of God, are tempted through their eyes and do nothing that would cause them to sin. It is a problem that both men and women must work on.

Ladies, let’s do our part.

Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world. James 1:27

For centuries the Church has considered it her duty to follow this mandate from Scripture. In the 1st and 2nd centuries Christians rescued the unwanted babies that were tossed into the river by the Roman women who did not want them. The believers adopted them and raised them as their own.

Is it so difficult to see the unwanted baby in the womb as an orphan? Orphans are children who are fatherless and motherless. They are fatherless because men have let the women have the “right to choose” so the fathers are out of the picture. They could, of course, step up to the plate and care for their young if they really wanted to. That is another social issue that should be dealt with elsewhere.

The unwanted baby in the womb is also motherless, since the mother has decided to contract with a doctor to kill the unborn child. This child effectively has no one to love her and no one to care for her. I believe that that makes these children truly orphans and therefore we have an obligation to rescue and care for them.

One woman who has been a shining example of that is Monica Migliorino Miller. Above all, Monica realizes that we are talking about real human beings. These children are rejected and lonely. Monica spent many years rescuing these unwanted children from the trash cans behind the clinics where abortions were performed. Here is what she had to say one night at such a facility:

I was struck by the realization that all of these fetal children had been alive only a few short days ago. Now they lay dead and abandoned, cut from their mothers’ wombs, cut from the human race: corpses of fetal bodies stacked on a loading dock inside an industrial park in boxes marked “for disposal.” As I stood on the edge of the loading dock it seemed my journey and theirs had brought us together at the edge of the world….Abortion wasn’t just about killing – and pro-life work wasn’t just about restoring to the unborn their right-to-life. In the image of those tiny human lives scattered about the loading dock I came to know the true plight of the aborted unborn: they were horribly, frighteningly alone.

I pray that all Christians especially will feel the compassion for the unborn that Monica feels. No, we are not all called to go out at night and rescue aborted babies from trash cans. But we can all do something. Many times on this blog I have begged readers to at least give up one latte a week and send the money to the Pro-life group in your community. There are marches and other things to participate in. The babies need our help more than ever today as the enemy, Satan, has convinced women that the right to their “choice” is the most important thing. “Choice” has become more important than human life. Of course, it is debatable whether or not those who advocate for choice are not just a bunch of hypocrites. If they really wanted “choice” for women they should give it to the unborn women. After all the unborn women are the ones whose lives are at stake.

Today, the religion of convenience and choice is the number one religion among liberals. The high priestess and priest of this religion are Cecile Richards and Barack Obama. They are the false gods of our day. As Christians, we must oppose them.

We must start with prayer “for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity” (I Timothy 2:2). We entreat God not only for our own lives to be peaceable but also for those who cannot entreat for themselves – the unborn.

After entreating God we must get busy and oppose the “war on the unborn”. Current political hype is about the supposed “war on women”. There are two falsehoods to note here. What about the war on unborn women? Don’t they count? And secondly, it’s not really in the best interests of women to have abortions. There is psychological damage to those who kill their children when they realize they really did kill a human being. And there is physical damage done to the woman’s body. Many are unable to conceive later when they want to. Also (see my last blog posting) their risk of cancer increases nearly three fold. So, who is really making war on the women? I maintain that it is those who are using the women they have fooled into following their agenda. Dear women — please wake up and don’t allow yourselves to be someone else’s tool. Think for yourselves.

I would highly recommend Monica’s book, “Abandoned: The Untold Story of the Abortion Wars” (Saint Benedict Press, Charlotte, North Carolina, 2012).

One of the very helpful things in the book is the history of Pro-life efforts in our country over the last 40 years. Monica started her efforts in the early days a few years after “Roe vs. Wade” was passed into law. Those of us that are old enough to remember that still are appalled at the idea that the supreme court could decide that unborn persons are not persons. What sort of insanity is this? But then, it has happened before. Other people groups, like Jews, have been declared non-persons. Monica made the connection between the assault on the unborn and the Holocaust.

In her autobiography, as we follow Monica’s life rescuing the unborn over the years, she explains the changes in the laws in our country that have affected Pro-life efforts. For instance, she used to be able to do sit-ins, not unlike those of Martin Luther King Jr., but laws, like RICO, have been passed. These laws deliberately target Pro-lifers. RICO has been used to jail many who protest in front of abortion clinics. For some reason however those who protest the cutting of trees are allowed to do so without consequence. Here in Oregon, a group of environmental extremists even burned down a Forest Industry building. It’s ok to rescue trees, but not babies.

Another thing you will notice in the story of the changes over the years in the fight against abortion is the increasing hateful attitude of the pro-abortion side. Each time the Pro-life groups make their point, the pro-death people come up with ways to try to stop them. Congress and the media are all complicit in this.

While sit-ins are not allowed anymore for Pro-lifers, we have other new technology such as the Internet that is helping us today. Monica spent countless hours photographing the little bodies of the babies that she rescued from the trash cans behind the abortuaries. Her pictures have helped to convince many that the unborn are real human beings. Nearly fifty percent of the images of aborted babies on the Internet are hers.

And we have ultrasound machines that show the mother that the little being inside of her is indeed a baby. We need to take advantage of these tools, as Monica took advantage of whatever means she had, to rescue the perishing unborn.

If you have been discouraged at the sheer magnitude of the abortion industry, be encouraged by Monica Migliorino Miller. Even one passionate woman can do something!

For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb.
I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Wonderful are Your works, and my soul knows it very well.
My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret,
And skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth;
Your eyes have seen my unformed substance; and in Your book were all written
The days that were ordained for me, when as yet there was not one of them.
Psalm 139:14-16.

The month of October has long been the month that we call attention to women’s issues. At this time of the year you will see many more Pink Ribbons around than usual. Advertisers will use them on their products in the stores in the hopes that you will see that they care about women and will choose their product over the others.

We want to raise awareness of breast cancer, and also the fact that there are many women and girls that are victims of abuse including domestic violence. Many people get tired of hearing about it, but I think it is good to remind ourselves that there is still a lot of injustice in our country. For whatever reason people choose to look the other way rather than face the difficult situations. I know that there are many problems in our society and we can’t solve all of them at once, but since October is Women’s Month, let’s at least look at one problem – Health risks connected to abortion.

I think that it is appropriate that we look at the link between cancer and abortion. My blogs all this month are featuring abortion because that procedure has become synonymous with so-called “women’s rights”. I am trying to encourage you to see that abortion is not only NOT a “right” but is actually an offense against God and the helpless unborn child, and it is also harmful to the women who have abortions.

There have been many studies done that show how the risk of cancer increases when women abortions. I will just cite several done by well-known organizations. You can go on the Internet and find many more.

1.  A study done with researchers from the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health and the University of Pennsylvania found that there was a significant association between abortion and breast cancer. It was noted that a woman having even one abortion increased her chance of getting breast cancer by nearly three times (2.86).
(The study was published in The Taylor & Francis Group, “Health Care for Women International”, Volume 32, Issue 11, 2011.)

2.  A website you can go to containing much information including links to research and many factual articles is: “Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer”. Follow their link to a discussion on just how abortion raises the risk of cancer. The scientific evidence is overwhelming enough to convince all but the ones who deliberately choose denial.

There really is a link. Planned Parenthood does not want you to know this. Whenever a new study comes out, PP tries to derail it in any way they can. Don’t fall for it. Abortion is dangerous to the health of the mother and of course deadly for the unborn baby. I will have more to say on this in the next blog posting.

For now, I would like to take some time to talk to women about abortion in a softer tone. Yes, I come down pretty hard on abortionists and especially Planned Parenthood. That is because they know full well what they are doing. They are making millions of dollars killing babies. They are fooling a lot of women into going along with them. If you were fooled, please don’t think you must stop there.

Abortion ends the life of a baby. If you have had an abortion I hope that you will realize that. The Psalmist tells us that in God’s book there are days ordained for everyone (Ps. 139:16). God makes each little child and He has plans for them. Abortion puts an end to all of that. We will never know what that child might have become.

My purpose in pointing out the specialness of the creation of children by God is not to make you more miserable. If you don’t know what you did you cannot be sorry for it.

If you are sorry for it, there is forgiveness with Jesus Christ. You are not the only woman who has made this mistake. There are many fine organizations, such as “Rachel’s Vineyard”, where you can find help. People are available to pray with you and counsel with you.

Never think that you cannot be forgiven and receive God’s grace. The apostle Paul went about arresting and putting to death Christian men and women. God saved Paul and then he went on to become a humble leader. Paul considered himself to be the worst sinner. Being a Christian does not mean that we don’t sin; being a Christian means that we’ve been forgiven.

Remember that YOU were fearfully and wonderfully made in your mother’s womb and God has ordained plans for you in His book of life too. Put the past behind you and move on in the joy of the love and forgiveness of Christ.

Please forgive me if you have taken anything in my past blog postings to be hurtful criticism for you. I am a sinner too. Please use my postings as information that may be helpful if you know of others who are considering abortion. Please see that I feel compelled to tell the truth about it because the media seems to enjoy fostering lies about abortion.

Feel free to answer this post with any comments, prayer requests, or questions about further help.

And please know that we remain in the precious love of God. He has not forgotten you and He loves you. Consider the next verse from our quotation from the Psalms:
How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How vast is the sum of them!
(Psalm 139:17).

God bless you.
